National Preparedness Month: Emergency Preparedness Disaster Guide


"Be ready for emergencies that can happen in Albany County. The Albany County Department of Health wants you to know what to do for the emergencies we see most often:
Extreme Heat:
Keep cool.
Drink water often.
Wear light and loose-fitted clothes.
Never stay in a hot car.
Rest in the shade.
Use sunscreen.
Know the signs of heat sickness and call 911 if someone faints.
Severe Weather:
Go inside when you thunder.
Stay away from windows, wired electronics, and water.
Bring in outdoor items if you can.
If you are outside, find shelter fast in a building or hard top car.
Never stand under trees or tall poles.
Air Quality:
Check the Air Quality Index each day.
Stay inside and keep windows closed when the air is bad.
Play less outside on smoky days and wear a mask.
Keep indoor air clean.
Know the signs of bad air - if someone coughs or feels short of breath, they should rest inside and tell an adult.
Flooding:
Know if your area can flood.
Never walk or drive through flood water - turn around, don't drown!
Move to higher ground if water rises.
Protect your home by moving important items up and unplugging electronics.
Wear long sleeves, pants, and waterproof boots.
Keep a waterproof bag of emergency supplies at home.
Winter Storm:
Keep an emergency kit in your car.
Drive slowly and leave space between cars.
Wear warm, layered clothing.
Walk carefully on ice.
When shoveling, take small scoops and lift with your legs.
Heat your home safely - never use ovens or grills and keep space heaters away from things that can burn.
