"The Albany County Department of Health recommends these safety steps:

Keep Your Pool Safe When You're Not Using It

- Keep your pool closed and safe when no one is swimming.

- Put a fence all the way around your pool. The fence should have a gate that closes and locks by itself and is too high for kids to open.

- For above-ground pools, lock or remove steps, ladders, or anything kids could use to climb into the pool when an adult is not watching.

- You can add extra safety tools, like:

- Alarms and locks on doors and windows that lead to the pool. Put them up high where kids cannot reach.

- Pool covers that lock so kids cannot get into the water.

Follow Rules and Make Safe Choices Around Water

- Do not dive headfirst unless the pool has a safe place for diving.

- Stay away from pool drains.

- Always swim with a buddy.

- Only swim when an adult who is watching says it's okay.

- Do not swim if you have been drinking alcohol.

- Adults who are watching swimmers should not read, talk on the phone, or get distracted.

Use These Steps to Stay Safe in the Water

- Use many layers of safety, like fences to block the water, life jackets, and adults watching closely to help prevent drowning.

- Make sure everyone in your family learns to swim. They should know how to get in the water safely, float, move around, swim a little, and get out.
