Sign Up for Notifications:
Know how your community warns you about bad weather. Some places use outdoor sirens. Others use media and smartphones to alert people about severe storms.
Create a Communications Plan:
Make a family plan ( https://www.ready.gov/plan ) that includes a meeting place and important information.
Choose a safe room in your home:
Basement
Storm Cellar
Room on the lowest floor with no windows
Practice Your Plan:
Practice a family thunderstorm drill often so everyone knows what to do.
Make sure everyone knows where the safe room is
Don't forget pets if you have them
Create an Emergency Supply Kit ( https://www.ready.gov/kit )
Prepare Your Home:
Before bad weather hits, if you have time:
Keep trees and branches near your house trimmed
Secure loose things
Close windows and doors
Move valuable items inside or under something strong
Help Your Neighbor:
Encourage your family to get ready for severe weather.
Take CPR training so you can help if someone gets hurt.
