What To Do During Exposure To Extreme Heat?

"☀️ Heat Advisory ☀️: Extreme heat can be bad for your health. Be aware of the temperature and take steps to stay safe from the risks of hot weather for you and those around you.

Have a Plan:

Every Spring, make sure your cooling equipment is in good shape. Put together a list of people who might need a hand, like family, friends, and neighbors. Keep their phone numbers handy.

Stay Indoors:

Stay in an air-conditioned place as long as possible. If you don't have it at home, go to places like the mall or library. Just a couple of hours in cooler air can help your body handle the heat.

Don't Leave Children and Animals in a Vehicle:

Don't ever leave kids or pets in cars by themselves. Even if you crack a window, in 10 minutes the inside of the car can get 20 degrees hotter.

Eat Light Meals:

Don't eat big, heavy meals when it's hot. They make your body hotter. Instead, eat lighter meals regularly during the day.

Drink Plenty of Fluids:

Drink more liquids, even if you're not doing much. Don't wait until you're thirsty. Aim for about 16 to 32 ounces per hour. Don't drink drinks with alcohol or lots of sugar. They make you lose more fluids from your body.

Wear Appropriate Clothing:

Dress in loose and light clothes.

Schedule Outdoor Activities Carefully:

If you have to be outside, try to do it in the morning and evening hours when it's cooler. Take breaks in shady spots often to give your body a chance to rest.

Monitor the Signs:

When it's hot, work with a buddy. Keep an eye on each other's condition. Watch out for those who might be at a higher risk. Babies, young kids, and older people are more likely to have trouble with the heat.

Stay Safe! Stay Cool!
