With winter weather continuing to impact New York State, it’s more important than ever to dig safely and protect buried utilities. Damaging underground lines can cut off heat and power to homes and businesses—putting communities at risk.

Check Your Markings: Snow can cover site markings. If they are lost or destroyed, submit a new request and DO NOT dig until the lines are re-marked.

Respect the Tolerance Zone: Even if the ground is frozen, use hand or vacuum excavation techniques to prevent damage.

Emergency Work: Freezing temps can lead to urgent utility repairs. Review the process for submitting an Emergency Location Request.

Stay safe. Dig smart. Call 811 before you dig.
